April 7th 7:30 PM Night Hike: Gather at 7:30 PM at the Center for a brief talk before hitting the trails. Hike will begin at bat houses to watch over 1000 Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge for the evening then continue on to May’s Prairie. This hike is for ages 5+ please register at (352) 754-6722. April 8th 9:00 AM Baby Bird Shower: During this second annual event join Hernando and Citrus Audubon Societies in helping stock HOPE Wildlife with supplies for baby season. The cost of admission is a donation of paper towels, bleach, simple green, Walmart or Home Depot gift card, towels or other item from the HOPE wish list. Live music, silent auction, bake sale and kids’ activities will take place throughout the day. HOPE wildlife will introduce some of their animal ambassadors after 10:00 AM. Guided nature and birding hikes will be offered throughout the day. Event ends at 3:00 PM.
April 11th 7:00 PM Firefly Photography: Florida is not the April first state that comes to mind when you think of great places to see fireflies, but we do have several species. Join Alice Herden of Green-Fly Media in this unique opportunity to learn about the fireflies of Florida and try your hand at attracting and photographing them. April 15th 2:00 PM Children in the WILD: This time of year bunnies are on most kids’ minds, at least the bunny that brings goodies in baskets. Bunny rabbits are on our minds at Chinsegut too. Children ages 5-9 are invited to join us at the Conservation Center from 2-3 PM to learn about different rabbits that call Chinsegut home. April 21st 8:00 AM Beginning Birding with Audubon: In honor of the birthday of John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, this month’s Beginning Birding will be combined with a Sierra Club trip at McKethan Lake Park just north of Lake Lindsey Rd on US 41. There is a $2.00 per person entry fee for the park.
April 21st 10:00 AM UF/IFAS Perfect Pairings; Butterfly Host Plants: Join Dr. Bill Lester of the UF/IFAS Hernando Extension office for a detailed look at how to plant your yard with butterflies in mind. Bill will discuss butterflies and their host and larval host plants. Learn how to attract a diversity of butterflies to your home and keep them reproducing. Many of the plants will be available during the native plant sale taking place March 22nd at Chinsegut Hill, right down the road from the Center.
April 22nd 8:00 AM Janet Butterfield Brooks WEA tour: JBB is a Fish and Wildlife property that is not open for public use, the only time it can be visited is through pre-arranged tours. This Earth Day we are offering a rare opportunity to visit JBB on a guided hike. All participants must be pre-registered at MyFWC.com/Chinsegut or by calling (352) 754-6722. Meet up at Chinsegut Conservation Center by 8 AM to carpool to the property. Limited to 20 participants.
April 22nd 9:00 AM Earth Day Family Fair: In celebration of Earth Day stop in to Chinsegut with the kids and camera for fun “Earth in a bubble” photo ops with Green-Fly Media, plant a coreopsis (sunflower) to take home and nurture or take a look at some old fashioned slides in a Chinsegut Memories slide show. All activities are free, no registration required.
April 29th 9:00 AM Chinsegut 2nd Annual Photography Exhibit: Photographers of all backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to submit photos taken at Chinsegut as part of our Second Annual Photography Exhibit. There is a $5.00 Submission fee, all photos will be displayed April 29th for a single day engagement. Green-Fly Media is sponsoring awards in several categories for participants.
