BROOKSVILLE, FL – Realizing that everyone needs assistance from time to time to be a responsible pet owner.  The Humane Society of the Nature Coast has opened a self-serve Little Pet Pantry at their Mobley Rd. campus.  Similar to the Little Free Libraries which are a global phenomenon, The Little Pet Pantry offers a small, front‐yard supply exchange where food items, collars, brushes and other pet supplies will bring people together and create communities of responsible pet owners.

“Our Little Pet Pantry doesn’t just belong to us, it belongs to the whole community,” says Barbara Sprague, Executive Director. “It’s our hope that this Little Pet Pantry will bring a little more compassion, a little more connection and a lot fewer neglected, abandoned and abused pets in our community.”

The actual pantry is located at the Society’s front gate at 7200 Mobley Rd, Brooksville and is accessible to the public 24/7.  Sprague says some of the donated items the Humane Society of the Nature Coast receives from our generous community, but cannot use immediately for their adoptable dogs and cats will be offered to help pet owners better care for their own pets.  Items like collars, leashes, brushes and training books will be stocked along with some food items the shelter animals do not use.  The Society’s campus is under video surveillance and although the pantry will be stocked regularly from donations, they note the items will be used, open and otherwise unsalable, but very useful.

Although the Humane Society of the Nature Coast is sometimes sought out as a resource for pet owners in need, the Society is hoping to expand their outreach and remove any barriers to responsible pet ownership that they can.

Sprague added “We want to prevent cats and dogs from ever entering the shelter system by giving their humans the tools they need to care for them, train them and love them.”

The Society invites pet owners in need to check out the Little Pet Pantry offerings on a regular basis and take what you need, leave what you can.
